WEEK 5

Further into Materials For Design

After Ms. Oh went through our week 4 assignment (Thermos flask material selection), giving us feedback on how we can improve in terms of our criteria selection and choice of materials we were tasked with another assignment related to Materials For Design but with a twist.

Week 5: About

Due to covid-19 restrictions, we were not able to go to the SP Library to check the wall of materials physically so we were sent a link that was a very comprehensive list of all the materials and very detailed descriptions/features and uses of every item. After a lot of discussion we have decided to work on a material called TechnoGel

What we were tasked with doing with this list was to find a suitable material that interests us, find its chemical name, work out its general description and properties such as the how the material is flexible, cheap, non-flammable and much more. We also have to include opportunities of the material which lets us discover how the materials can be used in real-life applications.

WHAT WE CHOSE

Apart from stating the material properties and opportunities, we had to find an existing material that can be improved through replacing it with our material of choice, additionally we have to state how it improved the functionality of the item.

Week 5: About

That was not all however, since we were working with a shoe, we noted that it has to keep its rigidity in order to still function normally as a standard running shoe would. So we devised that we would only replace the parts which the feet mainly at the insoles would mainly be in contact with the shoe near the toes and the heel which exerts the most pressure since TechnoGel is pressure absorbing material. The rest of the shoe will still maintain its original material so it will be able to function normally.
