WEEK 12 - DIGITAL FABRICATION

Starting ICPD again in week 12, after our recent 3D modeling lesson from week 7 using Fusion360 the lesson this week dives deep into the fundamentals of 3D printing and the many benefits it has.

Week 12: About

WHY DIGITAL FABRICATION?

During our lesson on week 12, we have learnt that digital fabrication allows people to have what they needed and when they needed it ranging from:

  • Food

  • Parts for machines

  • Artificial organs

  • Houses

And much more! There is simply no limit to what can be digitally fabricated as their ability to fabricate items regardless of their complexity, ability to shorten the supply chain and an overall generative & iterative design.

Additionally, some digitally fabricated items actually perform better than their real counterparts that are made of metal due to the ability to strengthen the bonds to a molecular scale of the material and save costs at the same time.

PRESENTATION PART 1

After we were taught on the basics of digital fabrication, we were tasked to present on certain topics based off our group. Since we were group 3, we had the topic of dealing with slicer settings in order to achieve a better quality printout. Where certain slicer settings such as layer height, print speed, part orientation, bed adhesion and supports can affect the quality of a printout.

At the same time while we were doing this presentation, we had to try to include some common terminologies such as overhang, bridging, infill and wall thickness which are important to know as we dive further into 3D printing.

Each group had to give a presentation on a specific topic that was assigned and we felt that we had to do a good job as there would be a test at the end of all the presentations which the questions were related to what we were presenting.

CONCLUSION

All in all, we learnt that not only is 3D printing essential to the future and development of prototyping, our chemical product also can utilize this information in which how we approach our design in order to make it more eye catching, by design it with intricate designs utilizing certain slicer settings.
